Did you know Calgary’s blue cart recycling list just got a little bigger?

Have you ever stood over your blue recycling cart wondering, “Can this go in here, or does it belong in the garbage?”

Good news, Calgary! There are now more household items you can put in your blue cart, making it a little easier to keep recyclable materials out of the landfill.

As of October 1, 2026, Calgary has expanded its list of accepted recycling materials to include certain food packaging, foam products, personal care tubes and aerosol cans.

Let’s take a look at what’s changed!

What Can You Recycle Now?

You may be surprised by some of the new additions to Calgary’s blue cart recycling program.

🥨 Food bags and wrappers

Certain flexible packaging can now go in your blue cart, including snack bags, food wrappers and pouches.

📦 Foam packaging

Have foam egg cartons, meat trays or takeout containers? These are now included in the expanded list of accepted materials.

🧴 Personal care tubes

Empty toothpaste, deodorant and lotion tubes can now be recycled, too.

🌿 Aerosol cans

Empty aerosol containers used for products such as hairspray, dry shampoo, sunscreen and cooking spray are also included.

These are the kinds of everyday items that can easily end up in the garbage simply because we aren't sure what to do with them!

Download the waste sorting Guide

A Few Things to Remember Before Recycling

While the list of accepted materials has grown, a little preparation still matters.

Before placing these items in your blue cart:

Empty them as much as possible. Squeeze out the remaining toothpaste or lotion, and empty aerosol containers according to the city's guidelines.

Keep items clean. Excess food or product residue can create problems during sorting and processing.

Check the guidelines. Not every bag, wrapper, tube or container is necessarily accepted. When in doubt, check the City of Calgary's recycling information.

The goal is to make sure materials can be sorted and processed properly so they have the best chance of being turned into something new.

Why Is Calgary Making This Change?

This expansion is part of Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recycling program.

In simple terms, EPR shifts some of the responsibility for managing packaging waste from municipalities and residents to the companies that produce and supply that packaging.

The program is designed to help fund recycling, improve consistency in the materials accepted across Alberta and reduce the amount residents pay toward recycling services.

According to the City of Calgary, single-family households have saved just over $7 per month since the program came into effect in 2025.

It's a good example of how changes to recycling programs can affect both our everyday habits and household costs.

Small Changes at Home Can Make a Difference

At home, it's easy to get into a routine. We toss the cardboard in the blue cart, food scraps in the green cart and everything else in the black cart.

But sometimes, the smallest changes can make us rethink what we throw away.

The next time you finish a tube of toothpaste, open a package or use an aerosol product, take a moment to check whether it can be recycled.

You might discover that something you previously tossed in the garbage now belongs in your blue cart!

And remember, the existing rules for materials such as cardboard, paper, food cans, glass containers and accepted plastic containers have not changed.

Want to Check What Goes Where?

For the most up-to-date information, visit the City of Calgary for details about accepted materials and recycling requirements.

A little knowledge can go a long way toward making recycling easier for everyone.

Let's Keep Calgary Recycling! 💙♻️

Whether you're tidying up your kitchen, organizing your bathroom cupboards or sorting through household packaging, this is a great reminder that small, everyday habits matter.

Here's a question for you: Were you already recycling these items, or is this news to you?

Crescent Heights

Sometimes, the right move isn’t about finding a bigger home. It’s about finding a home that better fits the life you want to live.

One of the things Carl and I love about real estate is that every move has a story behind it. For some people, it’s about finding their first home, growing their family, or finally getting that extra bedroom they’ve been dreaming about. For others, it’s about simplifying life, letting go of some of the responsibilities that come with homeownership, and embracing a new chapter.

Recently, we had the pleasure of helping a client sell their detached home and move into an apartment-style condominium in Crescent Heights, Calgary.

It was more than just selling one property and purchasing another. It was about finding a home that better suited their needs and lifestyle today.

And Crescent Heights? It’s a wonderful example of how downsizing doesn’t have to mean sacrificing location, character, or the things you love about living in Calgary.

Why Crescent Heights Is Such a Special Calgary Neighbourhood

Located just north of downtown Calgary, Crescent Heights offers a blend of established neighbourhood charm, green spaces, local businesses, and beautiful city views.

It’s a community with history and personality. Founded in 1906, the neighbourhood has evolved over the years while maintaining much of its original character. Its mix of housing options includes detached homes, semi-detached properties, duplexes, townhomes, and apartment-style condominiums.

For someone considering downsizing, that variety can be particularly appealing. You can change the type of home you live in without necessarily leaving the community you know and love.

Perhaps you want to remain close to downtown. Maybe you enjoy walking to a coffee shop, meeting friends for lunch, or spending time outdoors without needing to drive everywhere. Or perhaps you simply want a home that requires less ongoing maintenance.

Crescent Heights offers plenty of opportunities to make that lifestyle a reality.

Incredible Views and Green Spaces Right Outside Your Door

One of the standout features of Crescent Heights is its access to green space and some truly impressive views of Calgary's skyline.

Rotary Park is a favourite destination for residents and visitors alike. With walking paths, benches, a playground, and a splash park, it provides a lovely place to spend time outdoors. The elevated location also offers beautiful views across the city toward downtown.

Crescent Park is another spot to enjoy the scenery and take a break from the busyness of everyday life.

For someone moving from a detached home with a yard, having nearby parks and outdoor spaces can help make the transition to condominium living feel easier.

You may no longer have a private backyard to maintain, but you can still enjoy fresh air, green spaces, and a place to take a leisurely stroll.

And let's be honest: not having to mow the lawn, shovel every inch of a driveway, or spend weekends keeping up with exterior maintenance can sound pretty appealing!

Of course, condominium living comes with its own considerations, including condo fees, building maintenance, bylaws, and the responsibilities outlined in the condominium documents. Understanding those details is an important part of finding the right fit.

But for the right person, the trade-off can be well worth it.

A Neighbourhood With Character, History, and Local Businesses

Another reason Crescent Heights stands out is its blend of historic architecture and modern local businesses.

The iconic Centre Street Bridge, with its distinctive lion statues, is one of Calgary's recognizable landmarks. It reflects the city's earlier years and connects the neighbourhood's history with the vibrant city surrounding it.

The local business scene adds another layer of personality.

Whether you're looking for a casual lunch, a unique shopping experience, or somewhere new to enjoy a coffee, there are plenty of places to explore. Local favourites and newer businesses bring a variety of food, shopping, and experiences to the area.

Peter's Drive-In has been a Calgary staple for decades, while places such as Tokyo Street Market, Besties Floral Cafe, and Prairie Bazaar Vintage offer their own distinctive experiences.

There are also plenty of opportunities to discover new restaurants and coffee spots as you get to know the neighbourhood.

For someone moving from a larger detached home, this kind of walkable, amenity-rich setting can be a welcome change. Instead of spending time maintaining a property, you may find yourself spending more time enjoying the community around you.

And sometimes, it's those little everyday conveniences that make a home feel just right.

Downsizing Doesn't Have to Mean Giving Up Your Lifestyle

The word downsizing can sometimes make people feel as though they're giving something up.

They might picture fewer rooms, less space, or leaving behind a home filled with years of memories.

But we like to look at it a little differently.

Downsizing can be about making room for a different kind of life.

Maybe you no longer need four bedrooms. Perhaps the children have grown up and moved out, and maintaining a large house no longer makes sense. You might be ready to travel more, spend more time with family, or simply enjoy a home that feels manageable.

For others, the motivation is practical. A detached home can require ongoing work, from exterior repairs and landscaping to snow removal and general maintenance. Moving into a condominium may reduce some of those day-to-day responsibilities, depending on the building and its fee structure.

The key is understanding what matters most to you.

Do you want a second bedroom for guests? Is underground parking important? Would you prefer a balcony, additional storage, or a building that allows pets? Do you want to be close to public transportation, medical services, restaurants, or family?

These are the kinds of questions worth considering before making a move.

Our recent client's transition from a detached home to an apartment-style condo in Crescent Heights is a reminder that there isn't one definition of the perfect home. The right choice depends on the person, their priorities, and the stage of life they're in.

What Should You Consider Before Moving From a House to a Condo?

If you're thinking about making a similar move, taking time to plan can make the process much smoother.

Here are a few things Carl and I encourage homeowners to consider.

1. Understand your financial picture.

Before deciding what to buy, look at what your current home could realistically sell for and what you might expect to spend on your next property.

Consider mortgage balances, selling costs, legal fees, moving expenses, condo fees, property taxes, insurance, and ongoing maintenance. If you are hoping to free up equity, calculate what the move could mean for your overall financial position.

2. Think about how you actually use your home.

Do you regularly use every bedroom? Do you enjoy gardening, or has yard maintenance become a chore? Would a smaller space feel freeing, or would you miss having room for hobbies and visitors?

Your next home should fit your everyday life, not simply look appealing during a showing.

3. Look beyond the unit itself.

When purchasing a condominium, the building and its condominium corporation matter just as much as the suite.

Review the condominium documents, fees, reserve fund information, bylaws, insurance details, and any known or anticipated special assessments. Consider the building's maintenance history and whether its rules align with your lifestyle.

4. Explore the neighbourhood.

Visit at different times of the day. Look at parking, traffic, noise, transit access, nearby amenities, and walking routes.

In a neighbourhood like Crescent Heights, part of the appeal may be the ability to enjoy local businesses, parks, and city views. Make sure the specific location and building meet your needs.

5. Give yourself time to adjust.

Moving from a detached home into a condo is a lifestyle change, not just a change of address. Sorting through belongings, deciding what to keep, and preparing for a different living arrangement can take time.

Start early, focus on what you want your next chapter to look like, and remember that you don't have to make every decision overnight.

How Carl and Gwen Can Help You Plan Your Next Chapter

At Russell Realty with CIR Realty, we believe real estate is about people, relationships, and helping you make informed decisions.

Our job isn't to tell you that you need to move. It's to help you understand your options so you can decide what makes sense for you.

That might mean selling your detached home and purchasing a condo. It might mean staying where you are and making a few changes to enjoy your home more. Or it could mean simply starting a conversation about what your property is worth and what opportunities might be available in the current market.

We look at comparable sales, property type, neighbourhood trends, and competing listings to help our clients understand the numbers. We also believe honest conversations and clear communication are essential when making a big decision.

And our support doesn't end with buying or selling. We can help connect you with trusted professionals and resources as you prepare for your move, even if you're still months or years away from being ready.

There is no pressure to rush into a decision. Sometimes the most valuable first step is simply gathering information.

Your Next Chapter Starts With the Right Questions

Crescent Heights is a great example of how Calgary offers a variety of lifestyles within established communities. With its city views, parks, historic character, and local businesses, it can be an appealing option for people looking to simplify their living arrangements while staying connected to the heart of the city.

Helping our client move from a detached home into an apartment-style condo reminded us of something important: the goal isn't always to have more house. It's to have the right home for the life you're living now.

If you've been wondering whether downsizing might be right for you, we'd love to talk.

Whether you're ready to make a move or just beginning to explore your options, Carl and I are happy to help you look at the numbers, discuss your goals, and consider what your next chapter could look like.

Because real estate isn't just about buying and selling homes. It's about helping people feel good about where life takes them next.

Thinking about downsizing in Calgary? Reach out for a no-pressure conversation about your current home, your options, and what your next move could look like.

Crescent Heights listings

Calgary’s Blanket Rezoning Has Been Repealed — What Does That Mean for You?

If you own a home in Calgary, are thinking about buying a property, or have ever wondered what you could build on your lot, there’s a city planning change worth understanding.

On April 8, 2026, Calgary City Council approved the repeal of blanket rezoning, with the changes taking effect August 4, 2026.

You may have heard people talking about it, but what does it actually mean for you as a homeowner, buyer or seller?

Let’s break it down.

First, What Is Zoning?

Before we get into the changes, let’s talk about zoning itself.

Zoning is a set of rules that helps determine how a property can be used and what types of development may be permitted on it. Depending on the property's zoning, these rules can affect things such as the type of home you can build, the number of dwelling units allowed, building height, setbacks and other development requirements.

Think of zoning as the rulebook attached to a property.

Just because a property is in a particular neighbourhood, or because you see a certain type of home down the street, doesn't automatically mean you can build the same thing on your own lot.

And that is why understanding zoning matters.

What Was Blanket Rezoning?

In 2024, Calgary introduced citywide rezoning changes that made a wider range of housing types possible on many residential properties. The changes were intended to provide more flexibility for housing development throughout the city.

Under those rules, many properties that had previously been designated for single-detached homes could potentially accommodate additional housing forms, subject to applicable requirements and approvals.

However, the policy became a topic of considerable public discussion, particularly around neighbourhood character, housing choice, density and how development decisions should be made.

In April 2026, City Council approved repealing blanket rezoning, with the change taking effect on August 4, 2026.

The important takeaway? Calgary's previous blanket rezoning approach is no longer the default. Property owners need to look at the specific zoning assigned to their property and understand the rules that apply to their plans.

This doesn't mean that all redevelopment or additional housing is prohibited. It means that the property's current zoning and the applicable approval requirements matter.

Thinking About Buying a Home? Look Beyond the House.

When you're searching for a home, it's easy to focus on the things you can see.

Does it have enough bedrooms? Is the kitchen updated? Is there a big backyard? Can you picture your family living there?

Those things absolutely matter. But what about the things you might want to do with the property in five or ten years?

Perhaps you're buying a detached home and hope to add a backyard suite one day. Maybe you want to develop a basement suite, build an addition, or eventually redevelop the property.

Your plans may depend on zoning.

Before making assumptions about what a property will allow, take the time to investigate the possibilities and any restrictions that could affect your plans.

A property that looks perfect today may not offer the development flexibility you imagined. On the other hand, a property with the right zoning and characteristics could offer opportunities you hadn't considered.

Buying a home is about more than finding the right house today. It's also about understanding what you're buying for tomorrow.

Already Own a Home? Here's Why Zoning Matters.

Maybe you're not planning to move anytime soon. You simply want to make the most of the home you already own.

You might be considering:

Adding a secondary suite to help generate rental income.

Building an addition to create more living space.

Exploring a backyard suite or another form of additional housing.

Redeveloping an older property.

Understanding whether your lot has potential for a future project.

These are all situations where zoning can play an important role.

However, zoning is only one part of the picture. Building codes, lot dimensions, parking requirements, servicing, permits and other applicable regulations can also affect whether a project is possible.

And remember, a project that is permitted under the existing zoning may still require development or building permits.

If you're thinking about making changes to your property, it's worth doing your homework before spending money on plans or assuming a project will be approved.

The City of Calgary's planning and development resources are a useful starting point for checking your property's zoning and understanding the requirements for your proposed project.

Selling Your Property? Potential Matters, Too.

When it comes to selling a home, most people naturally think about the obvious selling features.

The number of bedrooms and bathrooms. The size of the lot. The condition of the home. The garage, renovations and location.

But depending on the property, zoning may also be part of the conversation.

For example, a buyer interested in a particular lot may have questions about adding a suite, expanding the existing home or exploring redevelopment possibilities.

Understanding the property's zoning can help you answer questions accurately and position your property appropriately in the market.

That doesn't mean every property has redevelopment potential, or that zoning automatically adds value. Any potential needs to be supported by the actual rules, property characteristics and applicable approvals.

It does mean that knowing the details can help you have more informed conversations with prospective buyers.

And in a market where buyers have choices, having accurate information about your property is always valuable.

Does This Mean Calgary Can No Longer Have Secondary Suites or Infill Homes?

Not necessarily!

This is an important distinction.

The repeal of blanket rezoning does not mean that all secondary suites, infill homes or other forms of additional housing are prohibited throughout Calgary.

What may be possible depends on the property's current zoning, the type of development proposed and the rules that apply to that specific project.

Some properties may already have zoning that allows certain uses. Other properties may require a different approval process, and some proposed projects may not be permitted under the existing zoning.

That is why it's important not to rely on assumptions, neighbourhood rumours or what happened to a nearby property.

One property does not tell the whole story about another.

If you're considering a project, confirm the current requirements with the City of Calgary or an appropriate planning professional before moving forward.

You can start with the City's official website at calgary.ca and explore its planning and development information.

Real Estate Is About More Than Bedrooms and Bathrooms

This is one of the reasons we believe real estate involves so much more than simply looking at a listing and deciding whether you like it.

As Realtors, we want our clients to understand the property, the neighbourhood, the market and the details that could affect their decisions.

Zoning is one piece of that bigger picture.

When we work with buyers, we want to understand not only what they're looking for today, but also how they hope to use the property in the future.

When we work with sellers, we want to understand what makes their property stand out and ensure we're communicating its features accurately.

And sometimes, the most valuable thing we can do is help you ask the right questions before you make a decision.

That might mean looking into a property's zoning, connecting you with the appropriate professional, or helping you understand which questions need answers before you move forward.

We believe in honest conversations, good information and making decisions with your eyes wide open.

Because real estate isn't just about transactions. It's about people, their plans and the next chapter they're working toward.

Have Questions About Your Property?

Whether you're thinking about buying your first home, adding a secondary suite, renovating your current property or selling in the future, understanding zoning can help you make more informed decisions.

The repeal of blanket rezoning is another reminder that every property has its own characteristics, rules and possibilities.

Don't assume that what applies to one property automatically applies to yours. Take the time to understand the details.

And if you're not sure where to start, we're happy to help you identify the questions worth asking and point you in the right direction.

Connect with us!
