Sellers, We Need to Talk About Your Smart Lock Code!

Sellers, We Need to Talk About Your Smart Lock Code!

“Are we in Spaceballs? At least do it backwards!” — Carl Russell 😂

We recently showed a property to some clients and were given the code for the smart lock. Carl's reaction? Well, let's just say he had a few thoughts about the security of that setup!

As funny as the Spaceballs reference was, it got us thinking about something important: how secure is your home while it's listed for sale?

When you put your home on the market, you're inviting potential buyers to come through and see whether it might be the right fit for them. Showings are a necessary part of selling, but that doesn't mean security should take a back seat.

And one of the simplest places to start? How people get into your home.

A Key Is Better Than an Easy-to-Guess Code

We understand the appeal of a smart lock. No physical key to hand over, no worrying about who has a copy, and a simple code that makes getting inside convenient.

But here's the thing: convenient doesn't always mean secure.

If you're using a smart lock with a combination code, choosing something easy to remember can also make it easier for someone else to guess. Your house number, a birthday, repeating digits, or an obvious number sequence might be convenient, but they're not necessarily secure.

And if that code is shared with multiple people, you may have little control over who knows it or whether it gets passed along.

For property showings, we prefer a Realtor lockbox system such as SentriLock, which uses authorized access credentials and provides an access record. This allows us to see which Realtor's credential was used to open the lockbox and when.

That added accountability matters!

Sellers, Here Are a Few Ways to Protect Your Home

1. Ask about your Realtor about lockbox security.

Talk to your Realtor about how showing access is managed. A Realtor lockbox with authorized credentials and access tracking can provide additional accountability.

2. Avoid predictable codes.

If a smart lock or combination code is necessary, don't use birthdays, addresses, repeating digits, or obvious number sequences. Choose a unique, hard-to-guess code, limit who receives it, and change or revoke access when appropriate.

3. Keep valuables out of sight.

Secure jewellery, cash, medications, financial paperwork, keys, and small electronics before showings. Even when people entering your home have a legitimate reason to be there, taking precautions is simply smart.

4. Protect your personal information.

Put away mail, bills, family calendars, documents, and anything else that could reveal personal details about your household or daily routine. You'd be surprised how much information a quick walk through a home can reveal!

5. Secure spare keys and other access points.

Avoid leaving spare keys in obvious hiding places. Remember that garage keypads, side doors, sheds, and detached garages may also provide access to your property.

6. Make security part of your selling plan.

Your Realtor should be able to explain how showing access is managed, how access records are reviewed, and how access is removed when it's no longer needed. It's a small detail that deserves attention before the first showing, not after a security concern arises.

A Little Convenience Isn't Worth a Big Risk

Selling your home is already a big undertaking. Between decluttering, cleaning, making repairs, and keeping the house ready for showings, you've got enough on your plate.

The last thing you need is an avoidable security concern while you're preparing for your next chapter.

We want buyers to feel welcome when they walk through your door, but we also want sellers to feel confident that their home and belongings are being treated with care.

So, for the love of security, let's leave the predictable codes in the movies! PUT A KEY IN THE LOCKBOX and don’t use your smart lock for showings.

Carl may have been joking about Spaceballs, but the message is serious: choose secure access, limit who can enter your home, and use a system that provides accountability wherever possible.
